CIEH Level 2 Award in Paediatric First Aid

The CIEH Level 2 Award in Paediatric First Aid has been developed to meet the first aid training requirements set out by The Practice Guidance

in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) for Ofsted-regulated child-care settings. This guidance includes details of the course content and the

duration of the training.

The CIEH Level 2 Award in Paediatric First Aid is primarily aimed at those working in child-care settings, but it will also be useful for anyone

with a responsibility for caring for infants and children.

Who Should Attend

This qualification is primarily aimed at those working in childcare settings, but it will be useful for anyone with responsibility for caring for

infants and children.

The national standards for first aid in childcare settings state that ‘at least one person who has a current paediatric first-aid certificate must be

on the premises at all times when children are present’. Additionally at least one person with a current paediatric first-aid certificate must

accompany every outing.

The Practice Guidance in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets out the first-aid training requirements for Ofsted-regulated childcare

settings. This guidance includes details of the course content and the duration of the training. The CIEH Level 2 Award in Paediatric First Aid has

been developed to meet these requirements and is based on the QCF Units F/600/2036 and J/600/2037.

The CIEH Level 2 Award in Paediatric First Aid is a two day, two-unit award comprising of:

Unit 1: Paediatric Emergency First Aid

Unit 2: Managing Paediatric Illness and Injury

What's Covered

The training programme for Day One (Unit 1) covers the following topics:

The role of the paediatric first aider

Dealing with emergencies

Dealing with an unconscious casualty

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation

Dealing with choking

Dealing with shock

Dealing with bleeding wounds

The course also provides the opportunity to practice the skills needed to adminster first aid to an infant or child who is:

unconscious

not breathing

choking

bleeding from a wound and in shock.

The training programme for Day 2 (Unit 2) covers the following topics:

dealing with chronic medical condition and sudden illness

dealing with the effects of extreme heat and cold

management of casualty with suspected fracture and dislocation

management of casualty with head, neck or spinal injury

dealing with conditions affecting the eyes, ears and nose

dealing with electric shock

dealing with burns and scalds

dealing with poisoning

dealing with bites and stings

records and reporting

It also provides the opportunity to practice the skills needed to administer first aid to an infant or child who:

requires a support sling

requires an elevation sling

has a suspected spinal injury

What You Will Learn

Successful completion of the training programme for the CIEH Level 2 Award in Paediatric First Aid will provide candidates with the knowledge

and skills to undertake the role of paediatric first aider in a variety of childcare settings.
