Level 2 Award in Principles of Manual Handling (QCF)

The aim of the course is to provide essential knowledge and understanding of manual handling practices.

At the end of the course you will:

Understand the reasons for safe manual handling

Understand how manual handling risk assessments contribute to improving health and safety

Understand the principles, types of equipment and testing requirements associated with manual handling safety.

The course is divided into four interactive modules:

Module 1 – Reasons for safe manual handling. In this module learners explore what tasks would be considered as ‘manual handling’ and how

these tasks could cause harm. They will also consider the legal duties on employers and employees and the consequences of not complying

with them.

Module 2 – Avoiding Manual Handling. Learners will explore the first stage in the manual handling hierarchy – avoiding it – and will apply these

principles to practical situations.

Module 3 – Assessing the Risks. In this module learners will learn about the principles and process of manual handling risk assessments. They

will consider how to estimate risk and will be introduced to the risk factors relating to manual handling activities (TILE principles).

Module 4 - Reducing the Risks. In this module learners find out how to reduce the risks from manual handling. They learn about mechanical

handling strategies as well as safe lifting techniques using animated movement demonstrations.

Throughout the course, learners use a range of e-learning interactions including questions and quizzes, drag and drop interactions and free text

entry activities.

Each module ends with a knowledge-based multiple-choice question called a ‘check-point’ – testing one aspect of the learning from the

module.

Assessment

Is a 30-question multiple-choice examination which is available online or paper-based.
